The Exhortation

"Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

Matthew 11:28

Dear Reader, if you're like most of us, you have a deep need, something that you, through your own efforts, have been unable to accomplish. You feel a need that goes ungratified, a desire that remains unfulfilled. In your heart, you may be fighting a war of many battles, a conflict has been raging in you. Perhaps you have only just come to know this, perhaps you've known it for a long time. You look around you and whereas before you saw happiness and meaning, now you see chaos and confusion. You look around in the World and you see a wasteland and a desolate wilderness where no green thing grows, where there is no garden. There is no freshening spring to sooth you, no grassy bank on which to lay and take your rest. And should you look within what do you find but the same kind of desolation and sadness, the same sickness of heart.

Maybe you have recently experienced a catastrophic loss or have had an encounter that has left you humiliated, weak and quivering with fear or rage. Or perhaps you have come to know through the many circumstances you face every moment of every day that the World, by itself, is not the source of joy and peace you are seeking. You may have looked at others thinking you could find meaning in the act of sex or marriage and family or perhaps simple friendship and always, no matter how deep the pleasure or joy it never seemed deep enough. Maybe you looked, as I have done, at alcohol or drugs to fill the void. Maybe sports, even extreme sports, have been your attempt to find the meaning you so desperately need. Maybe you looked at power or money, thinking, "Ah, yes. Here is something worthy. Here is something I can use to fill the emptiness or to heal the pain." But it never does of course, and it never will.

Most of the time, for most of us, we are not even aware of the void as such, not aware of the circular pattern we weave with our lives-going round and round, and always seeming to come back to the place from which we started. This, dear friend, is what we call the World and the Flesh and these things keep us stupefied and drugged. They ensnare us. They seem to offer gratification and fullness yet as often as we partake of their pleasures we are left with nothing after but a spiritual hangover and a sense of "Is that all there is?"

Well, I'm here to tell you that isn't all there is!

There is something else, something refreshing, energizing and life-giving; something that is capable of turning your life around, upside down and inside out, if you let it. But we shouldn't say something else. We should say rather some one else. For that which we need is not a thing, a teaching, a moral code of rules. No, what we need is a relationship with a person. That person's name is Jesus of Nazareth.

But what can Jesus give that the World and the Human Nature cannot? Love, forgiveness. mercy but also real power and confidence. Total, unequivocal acceptance. It is through Jesus and His Holy Spirit that we are made new. It is through a loving relationship with Him that we are able to be reconciled to God.

All the things that in the World and Human Nature are fleeting and empty are replaced through our acceptance of Christ by the permanent and the full. If you feel the stirrings of love, the quickening of the heart, or deep yearnings for peace, contentment, fulfillment, do not resist. But let Him, through acceptance and faith, transform your life into a thing of beauty, dignity, worth and meaning. It is through Him that we are delivered from the consequences of our sin, the pain of separation from God. It is our separation from God that renders us miserable and lonely. It is through Jesus, as much because of His humanity as by His divinity, that we are healed and made whole, as God wants us.

Are you ready for this kind of relationship? Are you ready for this kind of fulfillment? Are you ready to give up the separation, betrayal, and lies as well as the frustration of promises never kept, which is all the World ultimately has to offer? He asks you now, this very minute for your repentance and contrition, He asks you now, this very minute, to surrender to Him. He asks you now, this very minute, to follow Him. He asks you now to declare yourself His. Do not delay, do not hestitate.

Dear Lord Jesus,

Accept me please, just as I am. Through You, I turn gaway from my sin. I give myself to You, without regret or shame, without looking back and with love and faith. You are my Redeemer and Saviour. Through Your sacrifice I am reconciled to God, and am cleansed of all my sins. By myself I can do nothing. From this moment on, You are the Vine and I am the branch. From this moment on I am Yours and You are mine, my master and dearly beloved.

Dear Lord, come. Dear Lord be merciful.

Amen.
